Canadian Cycling Association Electric Velodrome Pace Motorcycle
The Canadian
Cycling Association (CCA) came to Electric Coast Vehicles Inc after
many of their riders had initial success with training behind the Burnaby
Velodrome electric pace bike supplied by Electric Coast in 2007. CCA asked
Electric Coast to create a next generation electric pacer for use in the
Los Angeles Home Depot Velodrome where the CCA Cycling Team is training
for the upcoming Olympics.
As many velodromes are phasing out the use of gas pace bikes, an electric one fits the bill. Electric pace bikes provide for a clearner training environment as they have zero emissions. Along with reduced noise emissions they are easier to operate due to a simple drive train which does not require use of a clutch for manual shifting typically seen in gas pace bikes.
Electric Coast modified a Zero X Motorcycle to create the electric pace bike which met the performance needs of the track team. Modifications included lock out of the suspension, increase of the top speed, installation of a system information console and a windshield. The pace bike can go over 60 km/hr for an hour on a single charge and has a recharge time of 2 hrs to gain a full charge. Although the battery can be opportunistically recharged for smaller durations between training session, if a full charge is needed the battery can be easily swapped out with a second fully charged battery in under 1 minute.
As noted in the January 15th, 2010 CCA News release "the sprinters and endurance riders used the moto for most of the session and Tara [Tara Whitten, a member of the CCA Cycling Team] noted that "the Americans, who were training here earlier in the week, are very jealous of our motorbike! It is an invaluable training tool, and we are lucky to have it."

There was one training day where it was used for almost the entire session by the endurance riders and the sprinters. The team gets really excited when they use it.
